Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan

Türkmenbaşy is a city in Turkmenistan, on the shore of the Caspian Sea. The city was founded in 1869 and until the 1990s it was named Krasnovodsk. In 1993 it was renamed by president Saparmurat Niyazov, after his self-proclaimed title Türkmenbaşy ("Leader of the Turkmen"). Population 51,000. A ferry service connects Turkmenbashi to Baku, Azerbaijan.
