Steve Prefontaine

Steve Roland Prefontaine (January 25, 1951 - May 30, 1975) was an American Olympic runner.

Prefontaine was born in Coos Bay, Oregon. He competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich before having his track career tragically cut short on May 30, 1975 when he died in a car accident. He was 24.

Two movies have been made documenting Prefontaine's life: 1997's Prefontaine and 1998's Without Limits.
