Shche ne vmerla Ukraina

Ukraine's glory hasn't perished (Ще не вмерла Україна) is the national anthem of Ukraine. The music was composed in 1863 by Mykhailo Verbytsky, a western Ukrainian composer and Catholic priest intended to accompany a patriotic poem written in 1862 by Pavlo Chubynsky, a prominent ethnographer in the Kyiv region.

In 1917 it became the anthem of the short-lived Ukrainian National Republic, but it was replaced by the Soviets. In 1992 the Ukrainian Parliament again adopted the song and lyrics as the national anthem. In 2003, the Ukrainian Parliament adopted a new lyric, which has modified Chubynsky's original words.

Ukrainian Words

Ще не вмерла Україна, і слава, і воля,
Ще нам, браття молодії, усміхнеться доля.
Згинуть наші вороженьки, як роса на сонці,
Запануєм і ми, браття, у своїй сторонці.

Chorus:
Душу, тіло ми положим за нашу свободу.
І покажем, що ми, браття, козацького роду.

Latin Transliteration

Sche ne vmerla Ukraina, i slava, i volia,
Sche nam, brattia molodii, usmikhnetsia dolia.
Zghynut’ nashi vorozhen’ky, yak rosa na sontsi,
Zapanuiem i my, brattia, u svoii storontsi.

CHORUS(twice)
Dushu tilo my polozhym za nashu sobodu
I pokazhem, scho my, brattia, kozats’koho rodu.

English Translation

Ukraine's glory hasn't perished, nor her freedom
Upon us, fellow compatriots, fate shall smile once more.
Our enemies will vanish, like dew in the morning sun,
And we too shall rule, brothers, in a free land of our own.

CHORUS(twice)
We'll lay down our souls and bodies to attain our freedom,
And we'll show that we, brothers, are of the Kozak nation.
