Richmond railway station, Melbourne

Richmond station (station code: RMD) is a suburban railway station in Melbourne, Australia. It is located in the suburb of Richmond, and is built on a rail bridge over the busy Punt Road. It is the gateway to the city for all of Melbourne's eastern and southeastern rail lines. Thus, trains to Frankston, Glen Waverley, Pakenham, Sandringham, Cranbourne, Belgrave, Lilydale and some to Alamein all pass through the station.

It is located 3.7km from Flinders Street Station in the centre of Melbourne. Richmond is located close to the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Melbourne Park, so it is often busy during sporting and other special events. Each of its island platforms is connected by a long subway.

Through its history, Richmond station has had three four different incarnations. The first station, which was low level, in Punt Road, opened on 8 February, 1859 and closed later that year, on 12 December. On the same day, the new station, which was also low level, opened in Swan Street.

In 1885, the Swan Street station was replaced by a new high level site. For a period, both the old and new sites operated, before Swan Street finally closed. On 26 March, 1960, the first high level station closed, and the present station opened.

Richmond station was the filming location for the opening scene of Romper Stomper, although in the film it was credited as Footscray station.
