The mung bean is the seed of Vigna radiata (Fabaceae), which is native to India. It is also known as green gram or golden gram. They are used to make bean sprouts and as a source of starch for cellophane noodles or fen si.

The mung bean is one of many species recently moved from Phaseolus to Vigna and is still often seen cited as Phaseolus aureus or Phaseolus radiatus. These are all the same plant.

It is excellent with chinese foods such as mung bean soup or sweet and pungent pork and makes an excellent cold salad bean as opposed to kidney beans.
