On October 14, 1806 Napoleon fought and defeated the Prussian army here (Battle of Jena-Auerstedt).

Economy

Jena is a manufacturing city, specializing in precision machinery, pharmaceuticals, optics and photographic equipment, and home to the famous Zeiss optics plant.
