HMS Terrible was laid down at Devonport Dockyard on 19 April 1943. It was launched on 30 September 1944. As with other ships in the class, work was suspended upon the end of hostilities in 1945. Terrible was eventually commissioned in 1948 in Australian service as HMAS Sydney.
