HMS Majestic was laid down at Vickers Armstrong on 15 April 1943, and launched on 28 February 1945. However, the end of hostilities saw work on the new ship suspended. Majestic was not commissioned until 28 October 1955, and only then for a new owner, the Royal Australian Navy. Majestic was renamed HMAS Melbourne in Australian service.
