Helena is a city located in Phillips County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,323. The city is the county seat of Phillips County6.


Helena is located at 34°31'34" North, 90°36'5" West (34.526223, -90.601377)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.1 km² (8.9 mi²). 23.1 km² (8.9 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,323 people, 2,312 households, and 1,542 families residing in the city. The population density is 274.3/km² (710.7/mi²). There are 2,710 housing units at an average density of 117.6/km² (304.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 30.59% White, 67.93% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,312 households out of which 32.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.8% are married couples living together, 28.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% are non-families. 30.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.28.

In the city the population is spread out with 32.5% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 83.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $18,662, and the median income for a family is $21,534. Males have a median income of $27,203 versus $17,250 for females.
