Band saw

Band Saw - can be used for both Woodworking and metal working. Other materials that can be cut with a band saw including carboard, styrofoam, and plexi-glass can also be cut on a band saw depending on the type of blade it is equiped with.

A Basic Description of a Band Saw

A band saw gets its name because its blade consists of a band of metal with teeth on it. This band rides around on two large wheels stacked vertically with a spacew between them. As the blade spins it comes down off the top wheel and out of the machines caseing. The blade is exposed here and then disapears again as it passes into a slot on the table portion of the saw. Then it goes around the bottom wheel and back up the top again.

Overview of how to operate a Band Saw

In order to use the saw the guard, which should be adjusted so that it is resting on the table when the saw is not in use, must be adjusted to a height of about 1/4 of an inch higher than the material cutting. The the saw is turned own. The the material is placed on the table and can be manuverd to cut it to is desired size or shape. The material must be firmly resting on the table at all times. Pressing a piece of material against the blade that is not resting on the table can lead to serious injuries.

Band saws can be used for cutting iregular shapes. The radius of a curve that can be cut on a particular saw is determained by the thickness of the blade.
