Antonio Carlos Jobim

Antonio Carlos Jobim (born Antonio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim, January 25, 1927 - December 8, 1994), also called Tom Jobim, was a Brazilian composer, arranger, singer, pianist and one of the greatest legends of bossa nova. Jobim's compositions, performed by João Gilberto, gave birth to the genre in the early 1960s.

Jobim's roots were planted firmly in the works of Pixinguinha, a legendary musician and composer that started in the 1930s the development of modern Brazilian music. Later, he was influenced for the music of French composer Claude Debussy and the records of jazz musicians like Chet Baker, Barney Kessel, Gerry Mulligan and Claude Thornhill.

Jobim found prominence when he teamed up with writer and poet Vinicius de Moraes in provide part of the music for the play Orfeu de Carnaval (1956), that later gained wide recognition in the famous film Black Orpheus. Eventually, the lyrics of his most popular songs were apported by de Moraes.

It's been said that his music was more popular at times in the US than in Brazil because of the strong jazz leanings in his music.
